A calm, inspiring writing retreat by the sea
Our writing retreat in North Devon is designed for anyone who knows deep down they have a story to tell — whether that’s a book you’ve always meant to write, your memoir, a novel, short stories or the book which showcases your business, your raison d’etre or perhaps simply a need to put your thoughts down on paper in a calm, supportive space.
If you’ve ever thought about writing a book, or just wanted the time and headspace to explore your ideas, this North Devon writing retreat offers exactly that. No pressure, no expectations — just the right environment, guidance, and encouragement to begin and get your writing successfully underway.
Many of our participants join us at a stage in life where they finally have the time and space to focus on themselves and their creativity. This is your chance to step away, tap into your power, and give that part of yourself the attention it deserves. The retreat breaks down what makes writing wonderful – how to craft your story so your ideas lift up off the page and enthrall the reader.
Why join this writing retreat in North Devon
It’s very easy to put writing off. Life gets busy, distractions creep in, and the time never quite feels right.
This writing retreat gives you that time back.
With a small, supportive group, expert guidance, and a peaceful coastal setting, you’ll be able to properly focus — maybe for the first time in years. Whether you arrive with a clear idea or just a feeling you want to explore, you’ll leave with real progress and a clearer sense of direction.
About your host, Helen Garlick
I’ve known Helen for a long time, and I can honestly say she is one of the most deeply caring people I’ve ever met. She may also be the most motivated person to help you get your book out of your head and onto the page.
Her academic expertise speaks for itself, and having published a shortlisted memoir of her own, she understands what it really takes to turn thoughts, ideas and plans into something written and real. Helen has also written many more books, magazine articles and periodicals in her previous life as a family mediator.
Her commitment to helping others do the same is unwavering, and you’ll be in safe hands throughout.
The Smugglers Rest experience
Your stay takes place at The Smugglers Rest, perched on the cliffs at the tip of North Devon, close to Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Croyde. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and steeped in history, it’s the kind of place that naturally slows you down and gives you space to think.
A writing retreat in North Devon should feel like a proper break as well as a creative one. That’s why everything is taken care of for you.
Each evening you’ll dine in our bistro, in the company of a successful guest author who will share insight, encouragement and experience. During the day, you’ll balance focused writing time with gentle structure and support.
It’s relaxed, welcoming, and thoughtfully put together — so you can concentrate on what you came here to do.

A quote from a previous retreat host, Helen Garlick
Will and Stacey Jones of the Smugglers Rest in Mortehoe have created the perfect environment for our creative writing retreats – warm, safe, fun and relaxed – in the breathtaking, dramatic North Devon landscape. Their bedrooms are frankly lush and the locally sourced, award winning food is the icing on this delicious cake. Not forgetting everyone’s favourite doorman, Kingsley the golden retriever who welcomes the participants from the first moment they arrive.
