New Owners of The Smugglers Rest Will and Stacey
Owning their own beautiful bed and breakfast by the sea has long been a dream for Will and Stacey. Needless to say they fell hook, line and sinker for the quirky Smugglers Rest right from the very minute they walked through its big heavy wooden front doors. Becoming its proud new owners in early 2016, they arrived with grand plans to inject new life into the big old building and return it to its former status as a social hub for Morthoe and the surrounding community.
Immediately after moving in, Stacey and Will began their extensive renovations to the tired old downstairs bar, transforming it into the charming Miss Fea’s Café, named after Stacey’s great granny and a name carried through 3 generations. Stace is an inspiring woman and wonderful cook. With the help of a loyal band of friends and family, drawn by promises of great food, terrible music and inappropriate laughter, the transformation of the pub into Miss Fea’s began take shape in earnest – this really is the house that love built. Their approach to the renovations has been respectful and sympathetic, aiming to brighten up the cafe and create a fresh, warm, comfortable environment without compromising the building’s heritage or losing any of its stunning original features.
Surf mad Will grew up in Reading, but has long regarded Devon as his second home, having holidayed here for many years, enticed by the area’s awesome waves and stunning coastline. Hailing from Durban, South Africa, fellow beach bum Stacey is acclimatising admirably to cooler waters, and has quickly fallen head over heels in love with this beautiful and unique part of the world.
That this adventurous pair should find their home by the ocean is very fitting – they first met several years ago whilst working together on board a luxury sailing yacht in the Caribbean. Marine Biologist Will later swapped yachting for the oil industry, working offshore as an environment specialist until 2015, whilst Stacey remained on board as Chief Stewardess, running her interior team and providing the rich and famous with incredible 6 star service at a 30° angle. Needless to say, Stacey’s hospitality experience is second to none. Her bright smile and sunny disposition have enchanted countless happy customers in every corner of the globe, and she is thrilled to finally be fulfilling her dream of welcoming new friends to her very own cafe and B&B.
Much more than a pretty face, Stacey is a woman of many talents, she is a trained chef and outdoors fanatic, enjoying running, kite surfing, hiking and horse riding. She is an ex-competitive swimmer and can give surfer Will a run for his money out on the ocean waves any day of the week.
Standing at 6’4″, Will is impossible to miss! From any room of the building, his distinctive booming voice and infectious laughter are omnipresent and absolutely unmistakable. Another adventure addict, his love for the ocean is matched only by his passion for phenomenal food. Everyone agrees that whether constructing or consuming, this man really knows his way around a fantastic sandwich! Will’s family breed beautiful black Labradors, and he and Stacey are keen to make sure that all furry visitors to the Smugglers Rest and Miss Fae’s are catered for just as fabulously as their two legged guardians.
Will and Stacey are incredibly proud of the Smugglers Rest, and can’t wait to welcome new friends from near and far into their beautiful home. Whether you’re here for a few nights of rest and relaxation, or just a few bites of rocky road, you’re sure to be greeted with great warmth and a fantastic cup of tea!
